1955<\/strong>
\nRobert Allen Zimmerman\u2019s teacher talks with the student\u2019s father.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour son does not have a flair for knowledge\u201d he says. \u201cHe\u2019s \u2026more of an artist.\u201d
\n\u201cAn artist is the one who paints, isn\u2019t it so?\u201d
\nThe teacher laughed. \u201cPerhaps it would be better to find him a place at your job, because I don\u2019t think he is capable of making it in anything else\u201d.<\/p>\n

Robert\u2019s father is a grocer.\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cAn amazing man\u201d says Robert about him many years later. \u201cBut he never saw me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Woe to all the children who are so conventional to be understood by their parents.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Zimmerman graduated from high-school, went to the University and after a semester he dropped out\u00a0 to become Dylan.<\/span><\/p>\n

1989, Greece<\/strong>
\nWe moved from the village. Uncle Alexis, the black sheep of the family, came with us to Patra<\/span>.<\/p>\n

In the early 70s, when he was twenty years old, he made a quick buck, enough to buy half a taxi in those days. Alexis took the money and left to live as a hippie. He went to Matala, to Ios Island and then he wandered somewhere in Germany.<\/p>\n

He returned ten years later burned-out and with his stomach almost destroyed. He didn\u2019t understand much. \u0397e was admitted to the hospital<\/span> and half of his stomach was removed.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy?\u201d I asked, as twelve-year-old are wont to fire away so many questions.<\/span><\/span>
\n\u201cToo many fried eggs\u201d, my father told me.
\nEver since he stayed at the village till his death, depressive and suicidal. He had a guitar that he wouldn\u2019t even touch any more. My brother and I strummed it, till it broke<\/span>.<\/p>\n

So one day we took him with us, him and his half stomach, to see Dylan at a local team\u2019s football stadium.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho is he?\u201d I asked him in the car.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Alexis took his time to answer. He didn\u2019t like talking.
\n\u201cDylan is my youth\u201d he said finally, looking outside. A man with half a stomach.<\/p>\n

And he sings, while looking at his reflection on the window\u2019s glass:
\n\u201cI \u2018m a man of constant sorrow, I\u2019ve seen trouble all my days\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

1965
\nNewport Festival<\/strong>
\nThe audience is waiting for Bob Dylan, the legend of folk music, who since he was 22 years old has written some of the most important protest songs, most notably Blowing in the Wind<\/em>.<\/p>\n

They expect to see him with his acoustic guitar and harmonica, just like they are used to, wearing clothes that his grandmother could also wear.<\/p>\n

Dylan enters the stage in jet-black leather clothes, sunglasses and high-heel boots. He opens his guitar-case and grabs a Fender Stratocaster.<\/p>\n

The audience boos him, calling him Judas having betrayed folk music.
\nDylan pressed on: \u201dHow does it feel \u2013 How does it feel \u2013 To be on your own?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

2014, Greece<\/strong>
\nI open the envelope Peter sent me from Corfu. I see two tickets for Bob Dylan\u2019s concert in Thessaloniki.<\/p>\n

\u201cI bought them without giving it much thought\u201d writes Peter.\u201d I cannot attend it. You go and see old-Bob\u201d.<\/p>\n

I break the news to Nelli.<\/p>\n

Her laughter makes me sing: \u201c\u0399 want you, I want you, I want you, so bad\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n

1960<\/strong>
\nThe nineteen-year-old Zimmerman arrives at New York and he plays music, initially at squares, and then in folk bars of Greenwich Village. His friends put him \"\"<\/a>up, he barely makes ends meet. He reads avidly.<\/p>\n

\u201cI read Machiavelli, Nietzsche, and many other great writers\u201d he writes in his autobiography \u201cbut the greatest of all was Thucydides, that\u2019s right Thucydides was the best.\u201d<\/p>\n

He has acquainted himself with the poetry of Rimbaud, Elliot, Pound, the prose poetry of Dylan Thomas. Influenced by them, he begins to write himself, too.<\/p>\n

And what did you hear, my blue-eyed son?<\/em>
\n And what did you hear, my darling young one?<\/em>
\n I heard the sound of a thunder that roared out a warnin\u201d<\/em>
\n I heard the roar of a wave that could drown the whole world<\/em>
\n I heard one hundred drummers whose hands were a-blazin\u201d<\/em>
\n I heard ten thousand whisperin\u201d and nobody listenin\u201d<\/em>
\n I heard one person starve, I heard many people laughin\u201d<\/em>
\n Heard the song of a poet who died in the gutter<\/em>
\n Heard the sound of a clown who cried in the alley<\/em>
\n And it\u2019s a hard, it\u2019s a hard, it\u2019s a hard, it\u2019s a hard<\/em>
\n And it\u2019s a hard rain\u2019s a-gonna fall<\/em><\/p>\n

Two years later Columbia releases his first record.<\/p>\n

2014, Greece
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dylan enters the stage at the port of Thessaloniki. I look at him thinking: \u201cThat man created rock music.\u201d It\u2019s just like seeing Charlie Chaplin, alive, before your very eyes.
\nOr Picasso.
\nOr T.S Elliot.<\/p>\n

The history of music of the second half of the 20th century is up there, dressed in a suit and a stetson .<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Even if he did absolutely nothing, just standing rigid as if in a museum, it would do. But he sings, he plays his harmonica and sits on the piano.<\/p>\n

He plays none of his old songs. At the end, he comes forth with his band, they bow to the audience and leave the stage.<\/p>\n

Inside the bus on the way back, people are complaining.
\n\u201cHe didn\u2019t even say good evening\u201d.
\n\u201cNot even thank you\u201d.
\n\u201cNot even hello Thessaloniki\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI liked his performance, it was kind of theatrical\u201d says Nelli and everyone gives her dirty looks. \u201cHe gave a show the way he wanted\u201d.<\/p>\n

1989, Greece<\/strong>
\n\u201cHow was the gig?\u201d I ask my uncle when I see him again.
\n\u201cPerfect\u201d he says. \u201cDylan played all the songs with his back turned to the audience.\u201d<\/p>\n

I was trying to figure out what was so perfect about it.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just Dylan\u201d my uncle says \u201cHe does what he thinks, not giving a dime if he\u2019ll be misunderstood. If he doesn\u2019t like something, he won\u2019t be bothered to conceal it; the audience sucked.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alexis laughs and coughs loudly. If he was standing in Dylan\u2019s shoes, he would act just the same. He was a misanthrope, he didn\u2019t bother to be likeable to anyone. That\u2019s why nobody talked to him.\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

A few years later he passed away. Just a couple of people attended his funeral.
\nIf I could play the guitar back then, I would sing for him:
\n\u201cThere\u2019s a long black cloud comin\u201d on down<\/em>
\n I feel like I\u2019m knockin\u201d on heaven\u2019s door.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

1964<\/strong>
\nThe Beatles meet Dylan in New York. They are more famous than Jesus, but they are still the good boys from Liverpool. Dylan offers them marijuana and introduces them to poetry. The Beatles become something more than the pop idols who sang \u201cI wanna hold your hand\u201d.<\/p>\n

They found the hippie culture with their yellow submarine and Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s the Vietnam War, the uprising of the Afro-Americans and the students, the May of \u201968, the Prague Spring, Woodstock, Matala, the communes in Germany.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor the times are a-changing\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n

2014, Greece<\/strong>
\nThe day after the gig we watch the film \u201cI\u2019m not There\u201d, an episodic narrative movie about Dylan\u2019s life. It\u2019s a far cry from a linear and poignant biography, as Gandhi\u2019s. It\u2019s a grotesque outcome, attractive and bizarre.<\/p>\n

The director and screenwriter, Todd Haynes, communicates Dylan\u2019s temperament successfully:
\nAn unconventional man, stature 5\u20193, with a rooster\u2019s voice and a griffin\u2019s soul.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A bad-tempered creature, far from amiable and kindhearted, who would be sometimes folk, some others rock and some others he would praise Jesus in his songs!<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t make any effort to be likeable. Quite the contrary; when he was classified into a category, as if possessing an innate aversion for labels, he went off the track.<\/p>\n

Against the grain, sometimes self-destructive.
\nYet he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for his lyrics and he was nominated for the Nobel Prize.
\nHis songs are perhaps the most covered ones since 1962.<\/p>\n

1976<\/strong>
\nSome claim that Dylan has run out of steam. But he releases Desire<\/em> a sublime album which, among the others, features One More Cup of Coffee<\/em>, Oh Sister<\/em>, Sara and Hurricane<\/em>.\"\"<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n

This is more like the beginning of a career, not the end!<\/p>\n

Here comes the story of the Hurricane<\/em>
\n The man the authorities came to blame<\/em>
\n For something that he never done<\/em>
\n Put him in a prison cell but one time he could-a been<\/em>
\n The champion of the world.<\/em><\/p>\n

2003, Greece
\n<\/strong>I\u2019m in Jam Bar at Naxos island. We are ready for a jam session amongst strangers. A guy from Serbia on the drums, a middle-aged guy from Athens on the bass, an Aussie on the electric guitar. The acoustic guitar and the microphone are reserved for me.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>No time for rehearsals, but that\u2019s jamming all about.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do we play? asks Kostas with his ever-present sun-glasses and stroking his belly, just like Belushi from the Blues Brothers.
\n\u201cAll along the watchtower\u201d I reply \u201cbut as Jimi Hendrix did it\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Aussie guitarist grins and cranks up the distortion.
\nWe use the A minor scale and I sing a Greek rendition of the song.<\/p>\n

1970<\/strong>
\nJohn Lennon parts ways with the Beatles and his debut solo album contains God<\/em>, where Lennon renounces his former self and all of his idols, including Zimmerman.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t believe in magic<\/em>
\n I don\u2019t believe in I-ching<\/em>
\n I don\u2019t believe in Bible<\/em>
\n I don\u2019t believe in Tarot<\/em>
\n I don\u2019t believe in Hitler\"\"<\/a><\/em>
\n I don\u2019t believe in Jesus<\/em>
\nI don\u2019t believe in Kennedy<\/em>
\n I don\u2019t believe in Buddha<\/em>
\n I don\u2019t believe in Mantra<\/em>
\n I don\u2019t believe in Gita<\/em>

\nI must wrap this Dylan-text up. It\u2019s too long for the internet standards, as usual. But I don\u2019t care about that. I must wrap it up and continue with something else, something different.<\/p>\n

The biggest threat for an artist is repetition and applause. If you keep repeating yourself and you are applauded for that, it\u2019s difficult to strike in a new direction which might displease the applauders.
\nThat\u2019s why Dylan is great. He went against his own audience.<\/strong><\/p>\n

An artist is not a football player. He isn’t trying to win the game. He loses himself in his passion. Because this is the only way of finding yourself; only by losing it.<\/p>\n

The carousel ride lasts for a few years. Enjoy it, make it count.<\/strong><\/p>\n
