Oliver Sacks presents in his famous book \u201cThe man who mistook his wife for a hat<\/strong>\u201d a unique case of optical agnosia.<\/p>\n

In this case Dr.P., a distinguished musician and teacher, remarkably cultivated and functional in every other way, loses the ability to recognize \u2013optically \u2013 items of daily usage, as well as the ability to perceive the people he interacts with as a whole.<\/p>\n

He is able to identify simple objects, a cube for instance, but when Sacks hands him a rose Dr.P. takes it and looks at it completely perplexed.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAbout six inches in length\u201d, he comments. \u201cA convoluted red form with a linear green attachment.\u201d
\n\u201cAnd what do you think it is Dr.P?\u201d, Sacks asks.
\n\u201cNot easy to say\u2026I think this could be an inflorescence or flower.\u201d
\n\u201cSmell it\u201d Sacks suggests.<\/p>\n

Dr.P. takes it to his nose as if he was asked to smell a screwdriver.<\/p>\n

\u201cBeautiful!\u201d he says promptly. \u201dAn early rose! What a heavenly smell!\u201d<\/p>\n

At some other point he shows him a glove and asks him:
\n\u201cWhat do you think it is?\u201d
\nDr.P. takes it and examines it: \u201cA continuous surface infolded on itself with five outpouchings\u201d.
\n\u201cYou have given me a description. Now tell me what it is.\u201d
\n\u201cA container of some sort?”
\n\u201cWhat would it contain?\u201d
\n\u201cIt could be a change-purse for coins of five sizes.\u201d
\n\u201cDo you think it might contain a part of your body?\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr.P. scans his own body, his hands, his feet, but he can\u2019t make the connection.
\nOnly when Sacks gets it on him exclaims \u201cMy God, it\u2019s a glove!\u201d<\/p>\n

When the time has come to leave Sacks’ office, he looks round for his hat.
\nHe approaches his wife who sits closely to him, takes hold of her head and tries to lift it off, assuming that this, her head, is the hat!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nAnother characteristic of Dr.P.\u2019s case was that he was focusing on details missing the whole, seeing the tree and \u201cmissing\u201d the wood.<\/p>\n

He could recognize a person\u2019s face by its details; his brother by his big teeth, his wife by a mole on her face, Winston Churchill from his cigar.<\/strong><\/p>\n

He couldn\u2019t describe what he saw in a painting or a picture. He could see the stream, the trees, the clouds, but he couldn\u2019t understand exactly what the painting depicted.<\/p>\n

Aside from a musician, Dr.P. was also a gifted painter.<\/p>\n

When Sacks visited him at his home, he found himself before the artistic depiction of the evolution of his neurological disorder. His earlier works were realistic and naturalistic with an emphasis on the details.
\nA few years later he was painting like Picasso, cubist representations of reality.<\/p>\n

Then he was drawing like Kandinsky\u00a0with obvious geometric shapes and eventually wound up drawing like Pollock: an abstract and chaotic combination of lines and colours.<\/p>\n

The evolution of his neurological disorder bears a resemblance with the evolution of painting in the twentieth century.<\/p>\n

Upon reading this book, the politicians that govern Greece the last years sprung immediately in Sanejoker\u2019s brain \u2013 which could provide enough material for a brief chapter in a neurologist\u2019s book in its own right.<\/p>\n

Undoubtedly, they suffer from a rare \u2013 and yet widely spread among the politicians of the entire globe \u2013 neurological disorder, for which we could coin the term \u201chumanagnosia<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n

Politicians act as if they can\u2019t perceive what human beings are.<\/strong><\/p>\n

They focus their attention on abstract definitions like economy, growth index, bank robustness.<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you show them a man, with flesh and bones, carrying a name and having a family and ask them what they see, they will be confounded.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt looks like something we tax to meet our obligations to our European partners<\/strong>\u00bb, they will answer.
\n\u201cIs this its only utility?\u201d the neurologist will ask.
\n\u201cWe terrify it and mislead it to vote for us\u201d, the politician will reply confidently.
\n\u201cDo you think that it is a thinking being?\u201d the neurologist will ask.
\n\u201cI can\u2019t be sure about it\u201d the politician will answer. \u201cIt moves, speaks, works, watches TV\u2026But I don\u2019t know if it\u2019s capable of thinking.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then the neurologist brings in an unemployed to debate with the politician.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am unemployed for two and a half years now, with zilch income and you are asking me to pay preposterous taxes, even though I don\u2019t have enough money to feed my own child<\/strong>\u201d, tells him devastated and one step away from committing suicide.<\/p>\n

The politician laughs.
\n\u201cIt looks like a real human being\u201d says to the neurologist. \u201cIt\u2019s a delusion, isn\u2019t so?\u201d
\nHe touches the unemployed and examines him from every angle, as if he were an object.
\n\u201cIs it a robot?\u201d says the politician still laughing. \u201cHow does it work, out with it!\u201d<\/p>\n

Then the unemployed begins to clobber him in tears.
\n\u201cYou destroyed my life\u201d he shouts, \u201cthe future of my children.\u201d<\/p>\n

Medical attendants in police uniforms enter the office and put the unemployed into a straitjacket before they drag him outside.<\/p>\n

The politician fixes his tie and wipes the blood off his face. Then he laughs again.
\n\u201cI almost believed that he was real\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

He gets up, goes to the closest chair, lifts off the head of the country that once was called Greece and puts it on his head like a hat.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cWatch yourself doc with these experiments, because you\u2019ll get in trouble in the end\u201d, says the politician and leaves to go back to his manor.
\nThe neurologist goes to the window, opens it and climbs to the windowsill.<\/p>\n

Tens of people jump from their window trying to fly.<\/p>\n
