An anthropologist (let us call her Jane) visited an African tribe (let us call it Narash).<\/p>\n

The Narash had been in touch with civilization \u2013 what we call civilization \u2013 in the past. However, Jane decided to stay a little longer with them to learn their ways and talk to them about her own life.<\/p>\n

At some point she began talking about her house. The Narash found it very strange that there was something such as \u201ckid\u2019s room\u201d. When they heard that the civilized parents sleep in different rooms from their children, they were shocked. This was almost a criminal act in their book.<\/p>\n

Forget about the Narash and the western standards of upbringing and think about this: man\u2019s greatest need, regardless of their age, is association.<\/p>\n

The skin is the biggest sensory organ. The hug, the caress, the kiss, these things make a man happier, healthier, more complete.<\/p>\n

Man wants to associate with other people. \u0391 child definitely needs<\/em> its parents, it needs the daily contact with them, even more than food.<\/p>\n

See what we proceed to do (we, the civilized):<\/p>\n

When a child is born (or even before that) we arrange the place of exile, the child\u2019s room. Most infants must learn within the first six months or the first year of their life to sleep alone.<\/p>\n

Psychologists preaching early infant independence have made millions out of their books and tips \u201chow to discipline your child to sleep alone\u201d. These tips also include approaches that bring to mind torments, since the mother (the good mother) must refuse to take the baby from its bed, no matter how much it cries.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe baby will get used to it\u201d maintain the psychologists of the E.I.I., meaning that it will get used to rejection.<\/p>\n

A parent who sleeps with the baby is a terrible one because in this way they raise it to be dependent on them. A parent who won\u2019t give in to its cries and leaves it on its own is a good one because they raise it to be independent.<\/p>\n

This is the first cage of our life.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 ~~{}~~<\/p>\n

\nIt\u2019s a cage!<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a cage where the child is imprisoned, secluded, out of reach of the only people that it needs during the first years of its life: its parents.<\/p>\n

Soon enough and in order to keep up with the modern way of life which requires both parents to be working all day long, the child will find itself in the nursery school, in a new prison.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a prison with lovely colours and wonderful toys, but the child is deprived of its parents \u2013 in order to become independent.<\/p>\n

Therefore, the baby learns firstly to sleep alone at night and secondly to be among strangers throughout the day.<\/p>\n

During the limited time that remains to see its parents, they are so exhausted and disappointed that an hour of \u201cquality time\u201d spent together is considered a luxury and a feat of the first magnitude; which is to play with the child, hug it, sing to it or read it a story.<\/p>\n

Quality time, free time and suppressed time: this is pretty much the way we live our lives; enslaved, mainly.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 ~~{}~~<\/p>\n

\u03a4he model of nuclear or single-parent family prevails in the modern cities. Grandfathers and grandmothers are considered a \u201cbad influence\u201d by today\u2019s psychology.<\/p>\n

It is preferable to raise an independent child in alien surroundings, among strangers than get it spoiled by its grandmother.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 ~<\/p>\n

Then the 8-hour cage comes into play: school.<\/p>\n

Nursery schools, kindergartens and primary schools are all-day now. The kids are left there from 8 o\u2019clock in the morning until 4 pm. It seems as if their parents try to revenge them or prepare them for the 8-hour workday that comes next.<\/p>\n

Some people do so because there is no other way. They either work eight hours (minimum) per day or the grandparents are not available because they are too old for it or they simply don\u2019t have time.<\/p>\n

But there are parents who even though they don\u2019t have to leave the house, unemployed or not, they still send their children away for eight hours. It is more convenient and furthermore they don\u2019t know how to play with their children, often they can\u2019t stand them.<\/p>\n

The children come back home shortly after 4pm, they eat, they study and they go to their extracurricular activities: music, art classes, sports, foreign languages, computer lessons.<\/p>\n

They return back home at night and if they can keep their eyes open, they fall asleep while watching a DVD, television or in front of the computer screen.<\/p>\n

Then the parents will carry them to the children\u2019s room, to their cage.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 ~~{}~~<\/p>\n

The school is a cage. Just look at it! There are railings everywhere. What purpose do they serve, to keep some out or to keep some in? Schools look more like prisons.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 ~<\/p>\n

The school is a cage: parrot-learning, tests, pressure, marks, mockery and competition.<\/p>\n

Some are good students, some others average and some others are thick.<\/p>\n

Chances of meeting an inspiring teacher are the same of meeting an honest politician.<\/p>\n

Have a flashback to your school days: how many teachers can you recall? Teachers that gave you hope and courage just like the one in \u201cDead Poets Society\u201d.<\/p>\n

The writer has met one of them (read Oh captain \u2013 my captain<\/a>). Have you?<\/p>\n

How many teachers do we get to know until we finish school? And why just a handful of them inspire us? Is it just the cage, the way school works? Or maybe the educators too are part of the cage?<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 ~~{}~~<\/p>\n

After the small cage, we enter the final ante-room: the army and the university.<\/p>\n

The army is a cage, there’s no need to elaborate on that.<\/p>\n

But also the university plays its role in helping a man to get used to submission.<\/p>\n

A friend of mine told me a few days after he entered the university: \u201cThe way psychology is being taught, brings religion to mind: beliefs and certainties. You are not allowed to question the model that the teachers teach. If you do, they simply won\u2019t pass you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 ~~{}~~<\/p>\n

And then it is the last cages\u2019 turn.<\/p>\n

Look around you. We live in cages, one above the other. We decorate them and build them the way we want, but they remain cages.<\/p>\n

Some cages are more expensive, more spacious or sunnier. Some people rent a cage and some others own it.<\/p>\n

We jump at the first opportunity for an outing or a trip. We have a 15-day vacation and when it\u2019s over we return to our cage.<\/p>\n

Look around you. The next time you get stuck in traffic, have a glance at the other drivers. See their faces and their motions.<\/p>\n

They are humans, trapped in moveable, automobile cages.<\/p>\n

Tens of moveable cages, one behind the other, immobilized, with their drivers honking to move on another five meters before they stop dead once again, to move on, to go where?<\/p>\n

To the big cage of work.<\/p>\n

How many people do you know of who do what they like and earn enough to make a living?<\/p>\n

Are you, be honest, keen to go to work? Speak the truth, no-one hears you but yourself. Do you wake up joyful in the morning saying: \u201cWonderful! I\u2019m going to work. For the next eight hours I\u2019m about to do amazing things\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 ~<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t mean to put the blame on anybody or denigrate anyone.<\/p>\n

The need to live and to provide the ones we love with the necessities, leaves us no other choice but do things we loathe.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t want to pretend that I am superior or something different. I have worked \u2013still I am \u2013 at toiling jobs getting no pleasure whatsoever.<\/p>\n

I pronounce myself satisfied because I can pay my bills, I maintain my mood to love my child and my partner and also I find some time to indulge myself with some wine and write my stuff.<\/p>\n

This is my cage: narrow, humble, my own.<\/p>\n

Just like Mandela, I am fond of my cell, I eat my food and I read avidly. But what could be the liberation I am waiting for?<\/p>\n
