Everybody knows the myth of Oedipus; because he was the one who cracked the riddle of the Sphinx. Had he failed, he would be just another guy like the previous 99 that were forgotten and we never learned their name.<\/p>\n

The prince became king because he cracked the riddle. But who were those who preceeded? They are nameless, but are they unimportant too?<\/p>\n

A story could be told about someone who reached the Sphinx and was defeated. Who were his parents, how was he brought up, how the need evolved within him to test himself with the beast? Was it vanity or maybe altruism? Or it could be the wrath of a man who got sick and tired of the beast and decided to face it, even if he knew that he would be defeated.<\/p>\n

What was the name of the guy, number 73 of the Sphinx\u2019s victims?<\/p>\n

What did his mother tell him before he set out to go to Thebes? Did he have a wife and children?<\/p>\n

He might have told his children: \u201cI\u2019ve had enough living in fear. Fear is not becoming to men. I\u2019ll fight it. I\u2019ll do it for me \u2013 and for you, too.<\/p>\n

His wife pleaded with him, his children were crying but Nr.73 set out to go to Thebes. On his way there he came across many people. When he told them of his destination and purpose, they wholeheartedly wished him the best, to succeed in redeeming them all.<\/p>\n

A widow put him up for a night.
\n\u201cMy husband is gone\u201d she told him. \u201cHe went there and tried to crack the riddle, too. He was Nr.42. He never came back. You stay, become my husband\u201d.<\/p>\n

Nr.73 became her husband for a night. But the next morning he went on.<\/p>\n

At some point he met an old woman who could barely see.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you my son?\u201d she asked him. When she heard his voice she remained undeterred. As if she already knew.
\n\u201cMy son went to find the answer to the riddle\u201d she told him. \u201cHe was Nr.25. He never came back. But I don\u2019t understand. Of all the roads he could take, of all the cities in this world, why did he choose to go there?\u201d
\n\u201cTo find the answer to the riddle\u201d Nr.73 answered.
\n\u201cAnd why did he have to find it?\u201d
\n\u201cBecause it exists\u201d.<\/p>\n

Nr.73 kept going till he found himself at a wise man\u2019s cave \u2013 and a dog\u2019s too.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou, being a wise man\u201d he told him, \u201cwhy don\u2019t you go there to solve the Sphinx\u2019s riddle?\u201d
\n\u201cI am not a wise man\u201d he told him. \u201cI m a fool and I know nothing\u201d.
\n\u201cThen why does everybody consider you as wise?\u201d
\n\u201cBecause I know that I don\u2019t know. They think they do. They have an answer for every question. I have but questions\u201d.
\n\u201cSo you can\u2019t help me. I\u2019m looking for an answer\u201d.
\n\u201cTo what question?\u201d
\n\u201cI don\u2019t know it yet\u201d.
\n\u201cYou don\u2019t know the question and you want me to tell you the answer?\u201d<\/p>\n

The wise man laughed his toothless laugh. His dog barked too.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy dog knows more than I do\u201d, the wise man said. But you are dimmer than all the others who have walked this way. Nr.19 came by and so did Nr.12. They were well prepared, having spent many years with the Sophists. They could answer unanswerable enigmas. They were positive that they would make it\u201d.
\n\u201cAnd they didn\u2019t?\u201d
\n\u201cIf they did, they wouldn\u2019t be mere numbers. You would have heard their names and perhaps there would have been plays written about them\u201d.<\/p>\n

Nr.73 got up to his feet and dusted his clothes off.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo you can\u2019t help me\u201d.
\n\u201cI already did\u201d.
\n\u201cHow?\u201d
\n\u201cWoof!\u201d said the wise man.
\n\u201cThe answer is\u2026the dog?\u201d
\n\u201cWoof!\u201d<\/p>\n

The dog look at them bewildered. Then he yawned and lay down.<\/p>\n

Nr.73 walked further until a storm broke out. He took shelter at a sheep farm. In there, there were the sheep, a shepherd and a child with swollen legs. Once he told him where he meant to go, the shepherd shook his head.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re not the first\u201d, he told him.
\n\u201cI know\u201d answered Nr.73.
\n\u201cWill you be the last?\u201d
\n\u201cI don\u2019t know\u201d.
\n\u201cAren\u2019t you scared?\u201d
\n\u201cI\u2019m tired of being scared\u201d.<\/p>\n

The child with the swollen legs came closer to him.<\/p>\n

\u201cYesterday I saw a dead man\u201d he told him.
\n\u201cIt happens. You\u2019ll see more.\u201d
\n\u201cHe told me you\u2019d come\u201d.
\n\u201cThe dead man told you so?\u201d
\n\u201cYes\u201d.
\n\u201cWhere did you see him?\u201d
\n\u201cIn my sleep.\u201d
\n\u201cHow was he supposed to know me?\u201d
\n\u201cI think it was you\u201d, said the child.
\n\u201cI\u2019m not dead\u201d.
\n\u201cNot yet\u201d.<\/p>\n

The shepherd gave Nr.73 bread and cheese to eat.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour child is weird\u201d, he told him when he finished.
\n\u201cIt\u2019s not mine\u201d.<\/p>\n

In the morning Nr.73 set out on his way. The child waited for him at the door.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s your name?\u201d he asked him.
\n\u201cWhat does it matter? You can call me Nr.73\u201d
\n\u201cI don\u2019t like it. People are not numbers. I even call our lambs by their name\u201d.
\n\u201cYet you slaughter them\u201d.
\n\u201cWe\u2019ve got to eat\u201d.
\n\u201cWould you slaughter me had you been hungry?\u201d
\n\u201cYou are not a lamb. You\u2019re a man\u201d.
\n\u201cYes, I\u2019m a man\u201d.<\/p>\n

Nr.73 said the last words sarcastically: \u201cYes, I\u2019m a man\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re a human\u201d, the child told him.
\n\u201cTake care of your father\u201d, Nr.73 told him and walked away.
\n\u201cHe isn\u2019t…my father.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s how the boy spoke.<\/p>\n

A few hours later Nr.73 reached the walls of Thebes. There was the Sphinx, asking. Whoever couldn\u2019t find the answer became a prey to its claws.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is\u2026\u201d began the beast.
\n\u201cI don\u2019t know\u201d Nr.73 cut it off, before he heard the riddle.
\n\u201cThen you shall die\u201d the Sphinx told him and stretched its wings to fly.
\n\u201cI\u2019ll die and 26 more. Maybe even more. But without us, the hundredth wouldn\u2019t ever come\u201d
\n\u201cThe first who came here, Nr.1, told me the same words. But you keep on coming\u201d.
\n\u201cAnd more will come. Until someone cracks the riddle. It will happen. No matter what. Because there are no questions without an answer.
\n\u201cThe wise man told you otherwise\u201d.
\n\u201cHow do you know the wise man and what he says?\u201d
\n\u201cHe thought of the riddle\u201d, the Sphinx told him and pounced on him.<\/p>\n
