It was an unusually bright winter. Rainer had lost his sunglasses. He had to buy a new pair, the sun was hurting his eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d like something vintage\u201d, he told the saleswoman.
\u201cSomething formal I presume, to suit your style\u201d she told him pointing at his costume.<\/p>\n

He was working at a bank and he had just knocked off.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes\u201d said Rainer and he looked at himself in the full length mirror. He was formally dressed, as always.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you think of it?\u201d she asked him and handed him a pair that looked exactly the same with the one he had lost. She was good at her job.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s precisely what I was looking for\u201d, replied Rainer and walked to the register.
\u201cCash or card?\u201d she asked him.
Rainer made no answer.
\u201cSir? Cash or card?\u201d
\u201cWhat\u2019s this?\u201d asked Rainer.<\/p>\n

At the edge of the edge there was a small stand with the most eccentric sunglasses on it. Rainer was pointing at a huge white-rimmed pair with red lenses. They were reminiscent of Willy Wonka.<\/p>\n

\u201cEhh, \u2026.\u201d, said the saleswoman bewildered. \u201cYou want this for a present?\u201d
\u201cNo, I want them for me\u201d.
\u201cThese are women\u2019s sunglasses\u2026\u201d
\u201cMay I try them?\u201d asked Rainer rather abruptly.<\/p>\n

She handed them to him and he put them on. He looked in the mirror again, he turned his head to the right, then to the left and he put his hands in his pockets. Then he stared laughing.<\/p>\n

The saleswoman joined him.
\u201cYes\u201d, she told him, \u201cthey are very funny\u201d.
\u201cI will pay with card\u201d.
She made no effort to change his mind.<\/p>\n

Rainer got out and looked around. He was seeing everything in a shade of pink, the buildings, the people, the sky. A child pointed him to his mother. She scolded it for it was an impolite thing to do, but she scanned him from head to feet nonetheless.<\/p>\n

He went back home. It looked prettier through the red glasses. He cooked broccoli with quinoa and chia seeds. He put two plates on the table. He ate by himself, listening to the news on TV.\u00a0 When he was done, he took the second plate to the children\u2019s room. He unlocked the door, removed the three bolts and went in.<\/p>\n

Mary was in her cage.
\u201cI have a surprise for you\u201d.
\u201cIce cream?\u201d went Maria.
\u201cYou know that sugar is bad for your health. Something else\u201d.
\u201cFried potatoes?\u201d
\u201cCarbohydrate; as good as poison\u201d
\u201cI like them\u201d.
\u201cYou have to learn to like broccoli, too\u201d.<\/p>\n

Maria turned her back on him. Rainer deposited the plate in her cage.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not the surprise I mean to show you anyway\u201d, he told her.
\u201cI don\u2019t give a damn\u201d.
\u201cLook what I got\u201d.<\/p>\n

He produced his red glasses from his rear pocket. Maria turned around slightly, gave a look from the corner of her eye and then she turned fully around.
\u201cThey are magical!\u201d she told him.
\u201cI know it\u201d.
\u201cDid you put them on outside? Don\u2019t tell me that you had them on outside?\u201d<\/p>\n

Rainer nodded with a smile.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey are magical\u201d said Maria and then she added, on edge: \u201cDoes this mean you will let me out?\u201d
\u201cIt means nothing. You know I can\u2019t do it\u201d.
\u201cBut isn\u2019t everything prettier with the red glasses?\u201d
\u201cIt is, but I can\u2019t let you out. I\u2019ll be destroyed\u201d.
\u201cWhat are you now?\u201d
\u201cWhat?\u201d
\u201cYou\u2019re miserable Rainer. You can enjoy nothing without me\u201d.
\u201cI can, I really can\u201d.<\/p>\n

He went to the door, thinking that he actually couldn\u2019t.
\u201cKeep on wearing your glasses\u201d, Maria shouted at his back.<\/p>\n

Rainer locked the door.<\/p>\n

He spent the rest of his day settling some unfinished business. Then he heard the news and fooled around on the internet.<\/p>\n

Later in the evening he sat to watch a film. He was up for a film-noir night. He meant to see The Maltese Falcon but when he turned on the pay TV a commercial for Toy Story 4 popped up.<\/p>\n

His finger pressed enter automatically. He had seen the first part twenty four years ago and it was the last animated movie he had seen since. Maria\u2019s laughter came to his ears.<\/p>\n

~~<\/p>\n

The next day he went to the bank with his red sunglasses on. His colleagues giggled, they took it as a prank. Rainer sat at his desk and didn\u2019t remove them. He served the first client like that. He told him it would be better not to get the loan.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd what am I supposed to do with the shop?\u201d
\u201cClose it, it\u2019s a mug\u2019s game. Go to the country\u201d.<\/p>\n

Initially, the client frowned. Then he said that he owned some land on Corfu, passed on to him from his parents. He had always wanted to go back there, but he had to run the shop. He would close it. He thanked him with a warm handshake.
\u201cThat\u2019s a nice pair of glasses\u201d, he told him before he left the bank.<\/p>\n

Upon his exit, the branch manager approached Rainer\u2019s desk.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow are you Mr. Rilke?\u201d
\u201cFine\u201d replied Rainer.
\u201cCarnival, right?\u201d he asked pointing at his glasses.
\u201cOh, is it already?\u201d
The manager straightened his formal tie.
\u201cMr. Rilke I overheard your conversation with Mr. Zervos. He wanted to get a loan and you dissuaded him from doing so\u201d.
\u201cHe wouldn\u2019t be able to pay it off\u201d.
\u201cThis is not our business. He would mortgage the house\u201d.
\u201cHe would lose it\u201d Rainer said.
\u201cWell, his loss would be our gain, wouldn\u2019t it be?\u201d
\u201cFor me personally, no, it wouldn\u2019t. What do you mean by \u201cour\u201d\u2026I don\u2019t know\u201d.
\u201cMr. Rilke, are you positive that you are fine?\u201d<\/p>\n

Rainer rose to his feet and saw how red the manager saw. He was like Mr. Krabs. Money, money, money, money.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m ready Mr. Krabs, I\u2019m ready\u201d said Rainer and began scattering his papers on the floor.
\u201cMr. Rilke!\u201d it was all the manager could say.<\/p>\n

Clerks and clients collectively stopped dead and gazed at him open-mouthed. The Dow Jones index fell 0,0000000002 points.<\/p>\n

Rainer got hold of his bag, left his formal suit jacket and stood at attention before the manager.<\/p>\n

\u201cSir, bank clerk Rilke, VAT number 097101103 reports. I resign due to honesty. The bank is the biggest robber, ever, and I don\u2019t want to be an accomplice in the theft\u201d.<\/p>\n

He made it to the door while the customers were applauding. Someone patted him on the shoulder and called him \u201clad\u201d.<\/p>\n

He went back home on foot. It was a twenty-minute walk but it took him five hours. It had been a long time since he roamed carefree the streets.<\/p>\n

He was observing the people around him, red and magical, just like in the movies. He bought bread. He smelled a feta. It occurred to him that no scent is more familiar, nothing else would most bring home to mind than the smell of bread.<\/p>\n

He was watching this new world, which had always been there but he never paid attention to it. Everything is new, if you take some time and look closely.<\/p>\n

Further down the road he saw two adolescents fondle to death at the entrance of a condo. He had lost that, too, but he would get it back.<\/p>\n

He entered the room holding two ice cream cones.<\/p>\n

\u201cChocolate or vanilla? Hurry, they melt\u201d.
\u201cVanilla\u201d said Maria. \u201cWill you let me out?\u201d
\u201cIt is you who will let me out\u201d.<\/p>\n

He unlocked the cage and handed her the ice cream. Maria stood opposite him and they began licking.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhich is your favourite colour?\u201d she inquired.
\u201cRed\u201d said Rainer and touched his glasses.<\/p>\n

They laughed as children do; and this is a special, unique laughter. The grown-ups think of it as something usual, even annoying sometimes. Yet, this laughter is the basis of happiness. The laughter of a child is the sound of Heaven<\/strong>. An adult who laughs like a child is a memory of the lost paradise. Everybody was once a child but at some point they stopped laughing. They put on formal glasses, black in colour to conceal their eyes, not to see, not to be seen.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd what shall we do now?\u201d
\u201cWe\u2019re going to Africa\u201d
\u201cGoing to Kilimanjaro had always been in my bucket list\u00bb.
Rainer and Mr. Rilke agreed.<\/p>\n
